This is my third week of my friday challenge. I based this skirt on Burda’s “Stretch Pencil Skirt” pattern and used this tutorial for adding gathers to the darts. The fabric is a stretch twill, and I couldn’t be happier with how this turned out! The classic pencil skirt is definitely given some sass with the addition of that back godet in lieu of a vent.
The entire skirt came together fairly quickly for me. I spent about 5 hours total, including taping the burda sheets together, drafting the dart gathers, hand gathering the darts, hand basting the invisible zipper and then finally stitching the waistband facing by hand to finish it all off. It was all finished in one marathon session starting at 8 last night and ending around 1 this morning, just in time to wear to work in the morning.
I have to say, I’ve quickly fallen in love with invisible zippers. They are so easy to insert, and I can’t get over how professional they look.
So there you have it! My new favorite pencil skirt pattern. As well as a new technique for manipulating darts.
Happy Friday!

Looks fab.
I love it, you did a great job!
Oh my gosh, fabulous!! I loooove what you’ve done with it and it looks so so good on you! Thanks so much for giving the gathers a go!
Thanks so much!
The darts look fabulous although I’m apparently incapable of sewing so I will never try this pattern out. . . However, I do LOVE the lion head at the Chinese Buffet AND the handicap van parking sign in the background! =)
